In our first learning leadership session, Emeritus Professor Geoff Scott guided us to identify the key capabilities and competencies of successful leaders in higher education in Australia and New Zealand. As a result of this session, our CAULLT members developed a list of traits that we value in learning leaders. In this follow-up session, we will hear from a range of leaders in higher education and their approach to their leadership practice. We will be joined by Professor Allie Clemans, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Learning and Teaching) at Monash University, Professor Sherman Young, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education at RMIT University, Professor Adam Bridgeman, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Educational Innovation) at The University of Sydney and Professor Marcus O’Donnell, Provost at Navitas Careers & Industry. The panel will share their insights into how they lead in areas such as setting purpose and guiding change, creativity, and connecting with, and developing others in their leadership journey.

Professor Allie Clemans, Pro Vice-Chancellor, Learning and Teaching, Monash University
Allie Clemans has over 20 years of experience in higher education with a focus on leading education strategy and supporting teaching and learning practice. Her research and teaching have focused on the kinds of learning required for practice to strengthen employability and capability, across community, workplace and higher education settings. She has a reputation for being a transformative educator to undergraduate, postgraduate and professional learners. She leads teams within Monash Learning and Teaching including the Monash Education Academy, the Education Design and Development and Education Technologies teams. These teams support staff professional learning and recognition, programmatic uplift of units and courses across the University, and the platforms for digitally-enabled learning and student success.
Prof. Sherman Young (Deputy Vice-Chancellor Education, RMIT)
Professor Sherman Young is the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Education) and Vice-President of RMIT University. He is responsible for the strategic leadership of RMIT’s student learning including curriculum innovations and the learner experience and leads the Education Portfolio which includes the Students Group, RMIT Library, Academic Registrar’s Group, the Centre for Educational Innovation and Development, the Centre for Academic Quality and Enhancement and RMIT Vietnam’s Student and Academic group.
Sherman’s research focuses on the impact of new technologies on media policy, cultures and industries.
Professor Marcus O’Donnell (Provost, Navitas Careers & Industry)
Professor Marcus O’Donnell is Provost at Navitas, Careers and Industry, where he oversees teaching and learning quality and innovation across the division’s Higher Education Colleges. Prior to this he held a number of senior leadership roles including Pro Vice Chancellor Teaching and Learning and Director of Digital Learning at Deakin University. Before coming to academia he worked as a journalist and editor and he began his time in the sector at UTS and the University of Wollongong as a media studies and journalism academic. He has led institution wide curriculum transformation projects at both UOW and Deakin.
